Javier Mercado is only 16 years old and he’s already survived a violent break-in at his house in Des Moines, Washington. The only reason he survived: his 2-year-old German shepherd named Rex.
The teen was home alone when he heard noises and glass shattering downstairs, and realized burglars had broken into his home.
Quick on his feet, he immediately ran to hide in a closet and call 911, while Rex was determined to face the intruders and protect his dad.
“I start hearing barking,” Javier explains to KCPQ Seattle in the video below. “One of the guys screamed, ‘The dog bit me, the dog bit me!'”
Then Javier heard gunfire. “My dog cries after each shot, it was the worse thing I’ve ever seen,” the boy says through tears. They had shot poor Rex, but that wasn’t going to stop him from protecting Javier upstairs.
Javier’s aunt, Susy Cadena, wrote about the event on a GoFundMe page: “Both of the burglars struggled and beat him up with whatever they could. Rex stormed back to the upstairs floor all beat up and bloody from the beating to check on his master who was still hiding in the closet.”
Rex was a hero even after getting shot, and he fought to defend his home and saved Javier’s life, according to People.
Susy continued: “As they entered the room where my nephew was hiding in the closet, Rex came out with the little strength he had left in him and threw himself at them as he knew my nephew was in danger. Sadly they shot Rex 4 times and finally Rex, the hero dog gave up in his battle. […] My nephew was protected by his eternal friend until the last bit of strength he had in him to do what his unconditional, loving instinct told him to.”
The burglars ran off upon hearing sirens approaching the house and Rex prevented them from finding Javier in the closet.
Incredibly, Rex survived. His bravery was unparalleled and his family considers him a hero and a “four-legs angel.”
The GoFundMe page, which was created to raise funds for Rex, originally posted a goal of $10,000 for Rex’s treatment. In only one day, over $30,000 was raised.
