Free WiFi Internet will be rolled out to 90 percent of Cavite’s residential areas for use by public school students. The announcement was made by Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla on August 18, 2020. “I am very happy to announce that the Province of Cavite is about to embark in a massive rollout of FREE WiFi system that shall cover (up to 90%) of the residential areas,” Remulla said in a Facebook post. Remulla said the free WiFi during the quarantine period is intended purely for the educational or academic requirements of students in the Department of Education schools who will be given access using their ID number. The Department of Education had earlier announced the use of new modes of learning like the internet platform when the school year begins amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Cavite leader said that beyond the quarantine, the internet infrastructure can be used as an economic tool for research, connectivity, online retail, and knowledge generation. “I truly believe that the internet should be a RIGHT and not a privilege,” Remulla added, emphasizing that the government should also accelerate the infrastructure for Broadband as well as the transformative “Internet of Things”. More infrastructure projects in Cavite are ongoing, including the Cavite-Laguna Expressway (CALAX) to facilitate faster travel, the new Sangley Airport, and the proposed Bataan-Cavite Mega Bridge. Manila City is also distributing educational tools such as tablets, laptops, and WiFi to public school students and teachers.
