The church defines virtue as 'habitual and firm disposition to do good.' The ancient greeks considered temperance, wisdom, justice and courage as the four best qualities. A roman poet called Prudentius wrote 'Battle/Contest of the Soul' which outlined seven virtues to oppose the seven deadly sins and was recieved so well it spread throughout Europe. Later in history exercising the virtues became a way to protect against the seven deadly sins. Chastity characterizes self-restraint, purity and abstinence and opposes lust. Temperance embraces humanity and equanimity and resists gluttony. Charity brings will, benevolence, generosity and sacrifice together and fights greed. Diligence groups persistence, effortlessness and ethics to battle sloth. Patience holds forgiveness and mercy and stands against wrath. Kindness carries satisfaction and compassion to confront envy. Humility grasps bravery, modesty and reverence to combat pride. Once you have the virtues in place the sins are easily defeated!
